Australian police now confirm that they shot a demented 95-year-old woman with a stun gun during an intervention on Wednesday. An investigation into the incident, which took place in the state of New South Wales, has also been launched, according to police.

“The woman is still in hospital and is occasionally unconscious. Her family is with her,” said Peter Cotter, New South Wales state deputy commissioner of police.

The 95-year-old woman, who lived at the Yallambee Lodge nursing home in the town of Cooma in New South Wales, had left her room with a knife in her hand. The police were called, and when the woman approached them, she was shot with a stun gun, hitting her head in the fall.

The police officer who shot the 95-year-old woman is under investigation, according to Australian police.

The police intervention has been heavily criticized and several civil rights groups have called for an independent investigation into the incident.
