Stay ‘ice smart,’ says Lambton OPP
With colder temperatures and winter weather arriving in the region, Lambton provincial police are urging local residents to think about ice safety.
“No ice is without risk as it can change dramatically in response to weather and water conditions,” police said in a news release.
“Weight-bearing properties of ice can be affected by many factors, including temperature, thickness, currents, age of the ice, pressure cracks and snow cover.”
Police said residents should avoid ice-related activities on warm or stormy says, and children should not play on or near ice-covered bodies of water.
Other tips include avoiding vehicle travel on ice, never going on ice alone, wearing buoyant thermal-protection clothing and carrying an ice staff, rope and cellphone, police said.
Police also warn alcohol and drugs can impair judgment and reduce the body’s ability to stay warm in cold conditions.
