Norfolk OPP are advising residents to never allow anyone remote access to their computers after an elderly resident was scammed out of $6,400.
Officers were sent to a Norfolk County address on Thursday after the resident reported being a victim of the so-called Amazon scam. The victim was called by someone purporting to work for Amazon and told there was a problem with the victim’s account.
To solve the problem, the caller required access to the victim’s computer. Once access was gained, more than $6,400 was removed from the victim’s account.
Residents should be skeptical of anyone calling to report a problem with an account and should never allow anyone remote access to their computers, police said.
As well, never give out personal, banking or credit card information and change passwords frequently.
Other tips from police include:
- Never download anti-virus software from a pop-up or link sent to you through an e-mail.
- Update your anti-virus software often and scan your computer for viruses regularly.
- Don’t click on links or attachments in e-mails sent to you by someone you don’t know.
- Turn on your browser’s pop-up blocking feature.
- Never click on a pop up that claims your computer has a virus.
Heater, socket set stolen
Norfolk OPP are investigating the theft of a small heater and a set of sockets from a Kent Street North address in Simcoe.
The theft took place early Thursday morning when a garage on the property was entered.
Wallet stolen
A wallet containing personal and financial information was stolen from a parked vehicle on Head Street North in Simcoe on Thursday.
Norfolk OPP officers were notified of the crime at about 6:04 am Thursday and told a pack of cigarettes had also been stolen.
Provincial police are reminding residents to lock their vehicles and remove all valuables.
Police are continuing to investigate and are asking anyone with information, or video surveillance cameras that may have captured any suspect(s) involved to contact the police at 1-888-310-1122.
