A police officer in Västerås in Västmanland is sentenced for two cases of assault, reports Vestmanland’s Läns Tidning.
The court believes that the police used unjustified excessive force against a man who was stopped for a vehicle check in early January this year. According to VLT, the police allegedly used pepper spray on the driver and used such violence against the man that it caused bruises.
Later, the driver is taken to hospital, suspected of drug offences.
At the hospital, he is again beaten by the same police. The incident was filmed by the police’s own body camera, according to SVT Nyheter.
According to the convicted police, the man must have been loud and questioning and believes that the violence was justified. Witnesses have said that they felt that the police had an aggressive and mocking tone towards the driver.
The policeman is sentenced to a suspended sentence and community service for 50 hours for his refusal. The verdict also means that the police will probably lose their jobs.
