Harington Rigaud, the principal of Haiti’s police academy, has been shot dead. The murder is the latest in a series of attacks on the judiciary.
In video clips that began circulating on social media on Friday, Rigaud’s bloody body can be seen lying on the ground. Later on Friday, police confirmed that he had been killed. According to spokesman Garry Desrosiers, Rigaud was shot at a police vehicle outside the police academy in the capital, Port-au-Prince.
No suspect has been identified.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned in October about developments in Haiti. He then described a nightmarish situation where the criminal gangs are completely taking over control.
The criminal gangs, for example, are believed to control over 60 percent of the capital Port-au-Prince with around 1.5 million inhabitants.
The country’s crisis deepened in 2021 when President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated.
