The temperature was 0 C and it was windy at the Sarnia beach with high waves in Lake Huron.

The fundraisers had a quick group photo taken and then headed to the water to jump in and then ran out quickly to return to their vehicles in the parking lot to dry off and warm up.

They raised a total of $4,718 for hospice.

A trio of senior staff at Fairwinds Lodge, a retirement community in Sarnia, raised more than $1,200. General manager Tina Mel, facilities manager Bob Hayward and chef Admire Zhakata were watched by several residents of the community who arrived in the lodge bus.

The plunge was organized by a group of campers from the Countryview Motel and RV Resort in Reece’s Corners which have been fundraising for the Sarnia hospice for several years.

The group had already donated more than $30,000 to hospice over the years, before Saturday’s event.

The volunteers hold several fundraisers each season at the campground, including an annual classic car and truck show. Last year, it featured more than 300 vehicles.

This year’s show is scheduled for Aug. 25.
