The populist Law and Justice party allegedly turned the state media into the government’s mouthpiece during its reign.
Poland’s new government has announced that it has fired the leadership of state-run media in order to restore their impartiality and credibility.
According to the Ministry of Culture, the chairmen of the boards of television, radio and news agencies can step down.
The previous governments of the right-wing populist Law and Justice party PiS were often accused of making the state media their mouthpieces, which conveyed the government’s propaganda and attacked the opposition.
In particular, the news channel TVP info was considered a propaganda channel. On Wednesday, TVP’s TV signal and website disappeared and the first channel of the Polish Broadcasting Corporation came in its place.
– The end of TVPis. TVP is closed, wrote the largest government party in Kansalaisforum X.
PiS has attacked the new prime minister Donald Hardly against the government’s media reform and accuses it of being illegal. On Tuesday, PiS MPs organized a sit-in strike in the buildings of the Polish Broadcasting Corporation.
The national-conservative PiS ruled Poland for eight years, during which time it had to clash with the EU, among other things, over its reforms against the rule of law. The party had to retreat after losing the elections earlier in the fall.
A center-right person became the new prime minister Hardly A pro-EU coalition. It also wants to reform the judiciary, which PiS allegedly modified to its liking.
