The Polish Academy of Sciences believes that the domestic cat is an invasive species. This means that the domestic cat has been moved from its natural environment by humans and therefore does not belong in Europe. The decision itself will not currently have any major consequences for either cats or cat owners. But the hope is that the announcement will lead to debate, says Louise Carlsson at WWF, an expert on felines
“The domestic cat’s hunting instinct causes it”
Because humans have moved the domestic cat to new environments where it disturbs it a lot. The cats’ hunting instinct disturbs birds, mammals, lizards and snakes, all of which end up badly in the cats’ claws.
Limit the cat’s hunting
We have to protect nature and perhaps it should be discussed whether we should perhaps limit the domestic cat’s time outside. Carlsson believes that we must raise discussions about the fact that the cats should not be allowed to go outside, for example, during breeding periods and other times are provided with collars that warn birds.
We depend on a functioning ecosystem for our welfare.
