Poland plans to spend at least 5.4 billion euros to repair the flood damage that occurred in the southern part of the country last week, says the Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Part of the money comes from its own budget, but a significant part also comes from the EU.

Heavy rains lasting several days caused widespread destruction in several countries in Eastern and Central Europe.

President of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen said earlier that the EU has ten billion euros in its cohesion funds, which can be used to repair the damage in the member countries. Five billion have been earmarked for Poland.

The EU also has a solidarity fund, the funds of which can be used for the aftercare of natural disasters.
