In Pokémon GO, a reddit user’s post is currently causing the community to feel nostalgic, which is why they are now mourning a 4-year-old April Fool’s joke. We at MeinMMO will show you what kind of prank it is.

Every year, Pokémon GO hosts a funny April Fool’s joke to really mislead its trainers and send them into April. So this year you could find Professor Willow with Ditto-Eyes and the shape-shifting Pokémon also played a central role that day in general.

Now, however, trainers are longing for a 2018 April Fool’s joke that changed the look of the monsters in the Pokémon Storage. We have summarized what the joke looked like and what the trainers want now.

That was the April Fool’s joke of 2018

Why is the community talking about an old April Fool’s joke? In Pokémon GO, some players are currently reveling in nostalgic memories. The user Tomantini gave the trigger for this with his reddit contribution. In this he showed a picture of a Pokémon storage that was completely pixelated in the old Nintendo style.

He wrote (via reddit.com): “How do you get your Pokemon stash to look like this? I found this and I want to get the nostalgia pixels too.”

What’s the deal with the optics? While such graphics are not typically found in Pokémon GO, this view is by no means uncommon for Trainers who have been in the game for more than 4 years. The reason for this is an April Fool’s joke from 2018. Niantic had changed the look to the nostalgic style for a few days to prank the trainers.

That’s what trainers from Niantic want

Some trainers are certain that this was one of Niantic’s greatest jokes, which is why they are still mourning it after more than 4 years. Players who missed it, on the other hand, are annoyed that they didn’t get to see it and that this visual is no longer available in the game.

This is mainly because the pixelated Pokémon remind the trainers of the beginnings of the main Pokémon game for the Nintendo Game Boy. It is therefore not surprising that many want this graphic back for nostalgic reasons. So you can read the following in the comments (via reddit.com)

  • DouchNukem: “The worst April Fool’s joke was taking this away from us!”
  • TheRealMrRogers: “I’m so mad I missed that.”
  • DAZW_Doc: “I don’t know why this function cannot be set.”
  • Amonster101: “It would be cool if it was adjustable. But then Niantic would have to create some of the sprites, and do we really want that after what they did with Blanche?”
  • LorenzoLBaldo: “Best update ever and it was a joke.”
  • Could the graphics come back at some point? Although trainers would like a feature that would allow them to adjust the game’s visuals to also have nostalgic game graphics, some players feel that this is unfeasible.

The reason for this could be the newer game generations, such as Hisui. These no longer have a pixelated look in the main games either, which is why Niantic would then have to develop them separately for Pokémon GO. However, it remains to be seen whether Niantic will eventually do this for the sake of the players.

What’s your opinion on the nostalgic look of the April Fool’s joke from 2018? Do you want the graphics back too? Let us know here on MeinMMO in the comments.

Incidentally, Pokémon GO celebrated its 6th birthday this year. So we took a look back in time and show you how huge the game was when it came out.
