She delved into documentation from the NIOD and the Utrecht Archives. And allowed herself the freedom to reconstruct Truus van Lier’s story with dialogues and all. She explains: ‘I thought: this story is so important for the city. You hear snippets, those daffodils are beautiful. But what’s the story, what happened? Because I had so little archive material, I thought it was important to look at what other women in the resistance were doing, how the war went, what her network looked like, those fellow resistance members of her group, how they operated, for what doubts and questions and deeds they have stood. Then I have to be a little more free than just citing the sources. Then it is important to see who she met at what times and how she eventually came to her liquidation.
