Last week there were demands from the Social Democrats for State Secretary Peter Magnus Nilsson’s resignation after he lied to the police about his poaching for eels. PM Nilsson is now leaving his job as state secretary, he reveals on Facebook on Thursday.
“I have previously apologized for the eel fishing 1.5 years ago and the trips around it and fines have been paid. I understand how inappropriate it was to fish for eels without a permit and to not tell the authorities how it was – even though I then called the police back and admitted that I had taken 15 fish, he writes, among other things.
TV4’s domestic political commentator Per Hermanrud is not surprised by the announcement.
– No, not at all in this situation, says Hermanrud.
– This eel soup never seems to end.

“I have decided to leave my job as State Secretary to the Prime Minister. I have previously apologized for the eel fishing 1.5 years ago and the trips around it and fines have been paid. I understand how inappropriate it was to fish for eels without a permit and not tell the authorities how it was – although I then called the police back and admitted that I had taken 15 fish. I also understand the inappropriateness of the Secretary of State role being involved in these types of stories. Sweden is in a vulnerable position.
I have now read in the media that I have also been reported for violating the species protection ordinance, an important piece of legislation that is supposed to prevent trade in protected species. I myself do not know what the report is about or even if I am the subject of the investigation – I do not get that information from the police. I also do not get to know if they write off the report. But the report is now being discussed in the media and in party political posts. Overall, the situation makes it difficult for me to do a good job.
I want to thank Ulf Kristersson for his trust, his warm leadership and cheerful mood. He has a great staff that was fun to work with. I have learned a great deal in an admittedly too short but very intense time”.
