Due to the low water level on the major rivers and the drought, salinity from the North Sea is penetrating too far into the country. This is harmful to nature and to crops. The KWA sends extra freshwater to the area via the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal and the Lek. The special De Aanleider pumping station at De Meern takes care of this.
