Please note, Netflix will no longer be supported on certain devices from the end of July! If you’re watching the video platform on an early Apple TV or an older TV, you’ll need to find another solution.

Since its creation in 1997, Netflix has established itself as a leading player in the audiovisual landscape. Millions of viewers have become accustomed to browsing the platform, enjoying its vast library of films, series, documentaries and original productions. However, recent news could well disrupt the habits of some Apple TV users. SVOD updated some pages of its help center and warned that, from July 31, the Netflix application will no longer work on 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TVs. We will have to find an alternative!

Netflix: obsolete Apple TVs to replace

The streaming giant justifies this decision by technical restrictions and its desire to “maintain the best possible Netflix experience” focusing on devices that can support the latest features and updates. However, these two Apple TVs are considered obsolete, including by Apple, which no longer provides them with updates.

Released in 2010 and 2012 respectively, the 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TVs do not even run under tvOS like the most recent boxes from the Apple brand, but under a derivative of iOS. The 2nd generation Apple TV sticks to 720p, while the 3rd generation was the first to stream in 1080p. But that’s in the past! Today, terminals do not even have access to the App Store, as they do not have storage space dedicated to downloads. Therefore, it is impossible to install new applications…

After the fateful date of July 31, 2024, there will remain four Apple TV models that can access Netflix: the fourth generation Apple TV HD and the three Apple TV 4K models. Fortunately, the number of users affected by this change should therefore be limited. They will have no choice but to invest in a new TV or find another way to access Netflix, like using a Chromecast.

Netflix: be careful if you have a Sony TV

Please note, not all TV models are compatible here. On its site, the streaming platform indicates that “Netflix may no longer be available on some TVs and streaming devices manufactured before 2015”. This is the case for certain Sony televisions, released between 2011 and 2013, which no longer support the service since the end of February 2024.

Other devices are affected in the future. “Netflix has announced that starting July 24, 2024, the Netflix app will no longer be supported on select 2014 BRAVIA™ LCD TVs due to technical restrictions”explains Sony’s support service. “You can use the Netflix app on your TV until July 23, 2024. After this date, it will be removed from the apps menu on all affected models”, namely the S9, W5, W6, W7, W70, W8, W85, W95, X85, X9 and X95 series. Check if your TV is affected!
