Playstation VR2 review

In our Playstation VR2 review content, we take a look at the features, games and usage details of the virtual reality glasses.

Playstation VR2 review: Playstation VR2 feels like a big difference from the previous version from the first time you start using it. It is a really nice device with 4K resolution, OLED screen with HDR and technologies. I have been using this device extensively for a month now. Now let’s take a closer look at both the device’s features and usage details.

PS VR vs PS VR2

Although the Playstation VR virtual reality headset was a successful device, its biggest handicap lay in its setup. Plug in the cables, adjust the bracket, set up the camera properly… So if you didn’t have a chance to place the device steadily, it was really tiring to set up and assemble it. For this reason, I can say that although I experienced many games on this device with great enthusiasm at first, I was too lazy to open it when a new game came later.

Sony will also be aware of this situation that it has signed a plug-and-play operation in Playstation VR2. It is already a much superior device in terms of technology compared to the first one, but I can say that my favorite aspect is definitely this practical structure. When I want to play a game, it is enough to plug the device into the console with the USB C input and set the controllers. That’s it, it’s pretty simple to set up and use.

Design and Features

Although the Playstation VR2 is different in many ways, it is actually a device that follows in the footsteps of its predecessor in terms of design. You adjust and tighten the headband with the button on the back. Again, on the front, there is an adjustment button for glasses placement. This time, there is a setting where we can adjust the lenses inside according to our eyes. Adjusting this setting is essential to achieve full clarity.

A headset is also included in the box and you can fix this headset on the glasses. Of course, if you have Pulse 3D or a different compatible headset, you can wear that headset while using the PS VR2.

In order to get rid of the camera problem in the first version, Sony has solved this problem this time with the cameras that it placed on the device and that have a Lidar sensor. There are four cameras on the front, and when you install the device, you set your playground thanks to these sensors. Setting up the playground is really simple, they have already put the instructions very simply and it is possible to follow all the steps correctly. It is more enjoyable to play standing up, but for those who want to play sitting, this option is also included in the installation.

I used the device frequently both in the living room and in my study. Since my living room is larger, I can say that although I use it standing up here, I usually play sitting in the study room. In other words, even if you have a very narrow area, I can say that it offers a very enjoyable gameplay, even if it is not as much as the standing experience.

One of my favorite aspects of the device is the camera button at the bottom. Normally, even if you wear glasses while installing, you can see your residential area thanks to the front cameras. These cameras are automatically activated when you leave the playground while playing a game. When you press this button, you can manually switch the camera from the game.

User experience

Playstation VR2’s Oled display has a 110-degree viewing angle and a resolution of 2000 x 2040 per lens. Although the images vary according to the game, they are very clear and detailed. It is possible to master all the details in games like Horizon or big-budget games like Gran Turismo, which has a VR version. You naturally get a very smooth gameplay experience in this glasses, which offers a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz.

The device also has infrared eye tracking. Thanks to this setting, which you will turn on during installation, you can make menu selections with your eyes, and a much clearer visuality is offered in games. Because the device uses a technology called foveated, which also uses infrared sensors.

Thanks to this technology, the device detects exactly where you are looking and offers you clearer visuals. In a way, we can say that it measures your focus, just like in real life. The area you focus on gains a much clearer visuality. In a way, a system similar to the eye tracking found in Meta Quest pro is included. If we take into account that that device is around $ 1,500, we can understand the importance of the technologies of PS VR2 more clearly.

PS VR2 review

With a weight of 560 grams, the Playstation VR2 is lighter than the first version. Of course, with the developing technology and better materials, a more ergonomic use has been achieved. Even if you use it for a long time, it does not cause headaches. In addition, there is vibration in the glasses part and you get a more realistic experience according to the scene you encounter. For example, when a giant robot passes over your head in Horizon, you can clearly feel that vibration. It is somewhat reminiscent of Razer’s Hypersense technology, but you get a much more successful experience as it is designed entirely focused on the game.

In the games, you progress in the classical way straight or by jumping. I have used many virtual reality glasses so far. I’ve never had the Motion Sickness problem until now. I even finished Resident Evil 7 on PS VR. Many games I tested on PS VR2 didn’t have such a problem, but I felt it from time to time in Horizon. Because climbing dynamics are very important in Horizon and you do this very often. Although the operation is superb, I can say that I experienced Motion Sickness for the first time in this game, albeit very rarely. Which I have played Crytek’s Climb style games before, but I did not have such a problem.

Sense Controllers

Let’s talk about controllers. As you know, Sony has signed a revolutionary controller with Dualsense and received great appreciation from almost all players. The company has also signed a similar system in PS VR2’s controllers called Sense.

These controllers also have Haptic feedback and Adaptive triggers. In other words, you encounter vibrations depending on the situation you are in and there is a pressure on the triggers according to the items and weapons you use.

Just like in Dualsense, when you stretch a bow and shoot an arrow, you feel that tension in your palms. I can say that the controllers work great in this regard. Of course, when there is so much technology, I have to remind you that it offers four or five hours of use.

On the other hand, I quite liked the controllers both in terms of design and ergonomics. In the first version, as you know, we used Move controllers. The Move actually worked very well, but in the end, it wasn’t a custom-made controller for that device. This time, we encounter completely VR2-focused controllers and you feel that they were designed for this, from design to ergonomics, technology to features.

Final Words

As a result, Playstation VR2 is an expensive device, considering its price, it is difficult to say that it is cheap. But on the other hand, when we take into account the OLED screen, high resolution, technologies such as Sense and Foveated, we should also mention that it is actually more advantageous than many virtual reality glasses on the market.

The biggest fine line here is the number of games. Very insufficient for the release period. On the other hand, the fact that it does not support PS VR games has limited this library too much. Sony urgently needs to increase the number of games with both 1st party and 3rd party companies.
