PlayStation is expanding its strategy of opening its first-party games to other platforms. LEGO Horizon Adventures could be the first step in this change.
Playstationis preparing for a radical change in the gaming world. The company plans to offer first-party games to other platforms, rather than limiting them only to its own consoles. LEGO Horizon Adventures, released for Nintendo Switch in 2024, was the first example of this strategy. PlayStation Studios CEO Hermen Hulst stated that with this move, they aim to bring the PlayStation community to a wider player base.
PlayStation’s First Step: LEGO Horizon Adventures
PlayStation had previously only released some of its games for PC. However, LEGO Horizon Adventures, released for Nintendo Switch, shows that PlayStation has started to bring its first-party games to other consoles. LEGO Horizon Adventures, a family-friendly and small-scale game, stands out as one of the first steps in PlayStation’s strategy to reach large audiences.
Hermen Hulst stated in an interview with Famitsu that more first-party games may come to different platforms in the future as a continuation of this strategy. “PlayStation Studios is developing games like Astro Bot and LEGO Horizon Adventures to expand our community,” Hulst said. “We also plan to introduce big productions such as Ghost of Yotei to the players,” he said.
Sony has taken remarkable steps throughout 2024, at a time when other major companies are pursuing similar strategies. While Microsoft is releasing first-party games such as Indiana Jones and Outer Worlds 2 on PlayStation, Sony also seems to be adapting to this competition. However, Sony is being very careful about game selection during this transition period and puts each game through a meticulous review process.
