The developers of the space MMORPG EVE Online have come up with a new game. According to the developers, EVE Frontiers relies on blockchain technology and is intended to let players change the game.
What is EVE Frontiers? EVE Frontiers is the latest game from the developer behind the MMORPG EVE Online and was announced last year as Project Awakening. CCP, a subsidiary of Black Desert Online makers Pearl Abyss, announced the survival MMO today with a trailer.
The game is due to be released soon for PC and Mac. The so-called founders will have first access. There is currently no specific date for the founder release or an official release. The main thing that is known so far is that EVE Frontier will be based on blockchain technology and will once again take place in the EVE universe.

The first MMO that can be modded on the server side
What is Blockchain? Blockchain is basically a list of records that can be expanded as desired. Later extensions can build on previous entries and confirm them as correct. This means that the entries are considered very secure, as no content or things can be manipulated or deleted without destroying further changes.

For EVE Frontier, CCP relies on the Redstone blockchain and the MUD toolset.
Why does EVE Frontier rely on blockchain? Speaking to PC Gamer, CCP CEO Hilmar Pétursson says the idea behind EVE Frontier is that it is the first MMO that can be modded by players on the server side.
EVE Frontier is intended to take place on a single large server, rather than on several different ones, as is common for online multiplayer games these days. The world of the game hosted on this server should ultimately be able to be permanently changed by players using the blockchain technology used.
But it’s not just the game world that should be customizable: it should also be possible to create your own currencies and systems.
What does server-side modding mean?
Mods are usually additional content for games created by other players. For example, in Baldur’s Gate 3 you can download tons of new hairstyles as well as clothing, classes and balancing adjustments. The same is possible in Final Fantasy XIV. However, only you can see these mods on your screen. Other players – whether in co-op in Baldur’s Gate 3 or in a raid in Final Fantasy XIV – do not see them.
Server-side modding, on the other hand, means that the changes you make to the game also apply to all other players. The game is therefore permanently changed by your modification.
Is this a classic blockchain game? The CCP CEO emphasized to PC Gamer that EVE Frontier is not a blockchain game with cryptocurrencies and NFTs. Their game is not a blockchain game, but a game that uses blockchain.
EVE Frontier has just been announced. It remains to be seen whether and how exactly blockchain technology will actually affect the game. Crypto currencies are also based on blockchain. An early buyer of bitcoins recently faced a real dilemma: in 2013 he bought bitcoins for €4,800, today they are worth almost €3 million – he had long since forgotten the password, when he came up with an unusual idea
