The semi-final match of the Copa America football tournament between Uruguay and Colombia in July ended in ugly chaos.
Colombia advanced to the final Jefferson Lerman by hitting, but after the match a fight broke out in the stands. With that, the Uruguayan players rushed to the stands to clash with the Colombian supporters.
Uruguay captain Jose Maria Gimenez called what happened as a disaster. He defended the players’ actions by saying that they had to protect their families.
– Our families were in danger. We had to go to the stands to pick up our loved ones who were carrying little babies. Disaster.
– During the whole half hour, there was not a single police officer there. Disaster. I hope the organizers would be a little more careful about families, people and the stadium environment. What a disaster, Gimenez gushed.
According to Gimenez, all the Copa America games had similar problems.
– Our families suffer because of people who drink a couple of doses of alcohol and then behave like children and cannot be properly.
Conmebol, the South American football association that organizes the championship tournament, said that it strongly condemns what happened.
– Intolerance and violence have no place on or off the field. We invite everyone to give all their passion to support their national teams and have unforgettable parties, the association stated.
