Players don’t understand a decision by Blizzard – “A carrot that no one can reach”

There is one clear criticism of Diablo 4 that many can agree on: Blizzard simply overdid it with the rarest items. They are so rare that looking for them is not motivating. Players think about how the situation could be improved.

What decision is it about:

  • In Diablo 4 there are so-called “Uber Uniques”: There are 7 unique items. These items are available from monsters higher than level 85, from World Tier 4.
  • The item drop rate is described as “almost impossible”. The odds are in the direction of 1:800,000. Most players definitely never see them.
  • The items also have no fixed values, so they can be weaker or stronger, and they cannot be traded.
  • It’s hard to understand why Blizzard decided to make these items drop so infrequently that they are out of reach for all players.

What’s the point of loot that no one can get?

What’s the problem with the items? Players are discussing these Uber Uniques on reddit. You can understand what function the items are supposed to fulfill in Diablo 4: They serve as the mythical “end goal” in Diablo 4, a carrot that players chase to keep them in line.

Just like you hold a carrot in front of a donkey’s nose so that it keeps running even though it can’t reach it, Blizzard dangles these items in front of the players so that they can pull themselves together and chop up the next thousand demons.

But it is believed that this carrot is actually unattainable. Loot that no one can ever receive is ridiculous in a loot game, complains one user. Another player says he would pay a lot of money to know how the Blizzard meeting went when deciding item drop chances in Diablo 4.

We don’t know how the meeting about the drop chances at Blizzard went. One person speculates that there was a discussion: “We don’t have an endgame in Diablo 4, so the chances of getting the items are 4 times worse. This is our endgame!”

Another explains: In previous Diablo games, the rarest items were too easy to get and everyone ran around with a “best-in slot”, but in Diablo 4 Blizzard totally overdid it. He has never met anyone who says they would farm a Shako, because the probability is simply too low and purely random to make it a goal.

This is added: There is also criticism that even if you are lucky enough to find an Uber Unique, you might still be unlucky enough to find one with poorly rolled stats.

On the other hand, such a unique is only active for this season, so you only get to enjoy it for a short time. After all, no one plays in Eternal Mode.

What would be a way to solve the problem? One player suggests at least making the items tradable. Then you would have an achievable goal: You could collect and trade strong items until you can earn enough gold to buy an Uber Unqiue. You would have a goal in mind, an achievable carrot.

Others consider: Such an item would be so valuable that it would probably only be sold for many US dollars in real money.

The best option would probably be to increase the drop probability so that the carrot is far away, but at least somehow seems reachable.
