Players discover that they can pause the match for everyone in Deadlock – immediately use it for mental games

Thousands of people are currently playing Valve’s new MOBA shooter Deadlock. However, some players are using a feature to troll other players.

What kind of feature is this? In Valve’s new MOBA shooter Deadlock (Steam), any player can pause the game for all players in the current match for up to 20 seconds by pressing the “P” key. This function is also available in DOTA 2, the MOBA also developed by Valve.

The feature is usually intended to allow the team to discuss tactics briefly or take a breather when things aren’t going well. In e-sports, this is often called a “tactical timeout.”

Even now – before the game is even out – there are players who are using this actually useful feature to be evil or even toxic.

Valve recently implemented another new “game” in DOTA 2, Sleet Fighter. Here you can see some gameplay:

How do players use the feature for evil? There are several ways to use the timeout in the “wrong” way.

  • Some players string together their available breaks in the middle of the game (via X.com) to provoke their opponents
  • Other players use the feature to shout at their fellow players, insult them and blame them for the defeat.
  • Some players also string together their available breaks at the end of the game to really annoy their opponents
  • The German streamer ohnePixel also declared “mental warfare” to his opponents when he discovered the feature and asked his fellow players to also start a break for everyone.

Changes to the timeout feature are likely

Could Valve still adapt the feature? Yes, Deadlock is currently only in early alpha testing. The developers are continuing to work on the game.

In the future, Valve may have different ways of regulating the use of timeouts, including restrictions and cooldowns that determine how many times a player or team can initiate a timeout in a given period of time.

In DOTA 2, the system is also regulated by the so-called “behavior score”. This value indicates how impeccably a player behaves. People who often appear toxic, quit matches or are often afk, for example, may not have access to the timeout function because their “behavior score” is too low.

Valve’s new multiplayer game combines shooter with MOBA

What kind of game is this anyway? Deadlock is an upcoming multiplayer game from Valve that is currently in alpha testing. Early players are calling Deadlock a MOBA shooter because the game has features of both a MOBA and a shooter.

In Deadlock, 2 teams compete against each other. Each hero has different weapons and 4 different skills. The shooter gameplay is reminiscent of Overwatch, but unlike Blizzard’s shooter, Deadlock is played in the 3rd person perspective.

Deadlock has already reached over 90,000 players on Steam during the alpha tests. Even before the game was officially announced by Valve, leaks about the game and its gameplay were already circulating on social networks and YouTube. In the meantime, Valve has also confirmed the existence of Deadlock: Valve officially announces new multiplayer game, it’s like a mix of Team Fortress and Dota 2
