Players complain about characters in Sony’s new PvP shooter

As part of the State of Play, Sony showed new gameplay for its upcoming PvP shooter Concord. Now players are complaining mainly about “ugly” characters and skins.

What game is this about? Concord is a new 5v5 PvP shooter from Sony that is scheduled to be released simultaneously on PS5 and PC on August 23, 2024. You should be able to pre-order the game from June 6, 2024.

Similar to Overwatch, you choose from a list of several characters, each with their own skills. Then you compete against each other in 5v5 battles, playing from a first-person perspective. The first gameplay was shown at State of Play. If you missed the trailer, we’ve included it here for you:

What are the reactions? Even though Concord’s gameplay may not look that bad and the game still has a chance to be a success, players are now complaining about the characters and skins that have already been seen.

In a Reddit post, one user even described these as the ugliest character designs he had ever seen. In his shared screenshot, a character can be seen wearing a massive spacesuit – although the head looks a bit small proportionally.

The fact that some players are really not happy with the character designs becomes clear when you look at the following comments. “Wait, that’s not a self-created character? That’s a design that was added and approved by a team?” asks one user in his comment. And the only answer there is: Yes.

Another user wonders who thought this color palette was acceptable and describes it as “piss yellow, mold green and wine purple” together with the blue lipstick, which is probably an unacceptable combination for the user.

“This just looks like the XCOM 2 character creator on Shuffle”

The character designs are described in the comments, but also with randomly generated NPCs. Another user writes in his comment: “It just looks like the XCOM 2 character creator on Shuffle.” Many users agree with this. One comment simply says: “We have XCOM 2 at home.”

What the developers actually thought behind these designs is something only they probably know themselves. Many players suspect that Sony simply wants players to buy better skins later. One user says: “Judging by the trailers, they want the characters to sell the game with their charm. They won’t do that if everyone looks like a randomly generated NPC.”

How bad the designs actually are for the game’s sales remains to be seen. Free skins are currently waiting for you in Diablo 4: Blizzard is celebrating Diablo 4’s birthday, giving you skins, putting loads of treasure goblins into the game
