Players and creators unite in an open letter against controversial raid changes

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

There’s a new development in Pokémon GO related to the Remote Raid Pass. Many players are critical of the announced changes and have sent an open letter to developers Niantic to reconsider the adjustments.

During the corona pandemic, Pokémon GO introduced so-called long-distance raids so that you could also participate in raids from the couch. At that time, there were several measures to respond to the pandemic situation.

These measures are also comfort features to a large extent. Now Pokémon GO is reducing the features again, which is not the first time that the community has met with great resistance.

Now the long-distance raids are to be changed and at the same time there will be a price increase. Here you can find more information about the new long-distance raids, which are to apply from April 6th.

There is even a petition with several 10,000 signatures that wants to take action against the adjustments.

The next level of escalation is an open letter that was shared on Reddit, among other things, to get the developers to listen more (via reddit.com).

It is particularly about the limitation to 5 usable long-distance raid passes on one day:

We do not agree with your decision and the majority of us would like you to know that the “limit remote raids to 5 runs per day” will hurt some players:

  • Rural trainers who lack adequate support from the local community
  • Coaches with disabilities who are physically unable to come outside to play
  • Trainers who suffer from severe social anxiety and have mental difficulties going outside to participate in raids
  • Coaches who work night shifts and cannot attend during the day
  • Single parent trainers managing children, a household and a career with a minimal investment of time
  • And most importantly, the Remote Raid changes will limit our global interaction with our trainers, with whom we’ve built strong relationships over the past 3 years.

From the open letter via Reddit

Players see more than just a convenience feature in remote raid passes. It has become an important feature that has enabled new ways of playing. It is argued that if developer Niantic wanted players to play outside again, there would be other tools – including bonuses for normal raids without a remote pass.

The thread on Reddit also counts many content creators supporting the open letter. On Reddit alone, 1,600 users gave the thread a thumbs up within 4 hours – and the trend is rising.

Unlike previous actions, however, the open letter does not call for a boycott. You want to be heard and hope for an opinion and changes.
