Companions are an important function in Baldur’s Gate 3. The NPCs help you in battle, have their own stories and can even become permanent partners. Now one player has tried to figure out the quickest way to mess up with the companions – with surprising results.
Spoiler warning: Here we cover topics from the stories of the companions, some of which you only find out about late in the game.
That’s why it’s important what companions think of you:
This is what the player found out: A user on Reddit uses a script to read how much rejection (or more correctly: “negative approval”) certain actions generate among the respective NPCs.
The script was made for version 1.0, but should still be accurate. The player limited himself to those decisions that had the most negative influence. The interesting thing: killing a companion doesn’t come up.
Murder only gives -10 approval, at least as a Dark Desire. So it doesn’t seem so bad for your companions to ram a knife into their ribs. Maybe because Lazarus can revive her anyway. They cope less well with other decisions:
The worst decisions in terms of encouragement
With enough approval from the companions, there are even raunchy scenes:
“The thing with Karlach hits hard”
Fans discuss the various decisions under the post. In particular, Karlach’s blatant loss of trust seems to have hit the players hard. One user says: When at one point he decided against starting a romance with the Tiefling woman, her subsequent speech was quite painful.
Many find her reaction understandable. According to the comments, people who are terminally ill know no greater fear than being abandoned by their partner. Karlach is apparently in a similar situation due to her infernal machine.
In addition, Karlach had already been betrayed by one of the opponents in the game. By the way, there is also a 20 point deduction here if you kill the opponent in question without taking them with you. This can also happen due to a bug if she is there.
There are other decisions, such as killing Gale’s cat, which results in a relative amount that is 10% of his approval. However, whoever does that is probably already so well respected by Gale that it isn’t one of the toughest decisions.
However, it is not a big surprise that Karlach, of all people, is taking the community so seriously. The barbarian is one of the dearest companions, but has an ungrateful end:
