Helldivers 2 features a wider range of firearms and now even an exosuit. But that’s not enough for one player: he fights with his bare fists and already has 116 melee kills.
What did the player accomplish? reddit user xXIns1d1ousXx posted his stat list on reddit. This looks normal at first glance: 337 kills with 75.5% accuracy. The player, who is called PoopyDevourer in Helldivers 2, has died exactly twice at the time of recording.
Further down the list, however, there are a whopping 116 Melee kills.
Why is that impressive? Helldivers 2 is a pure shooter. There is currently not a single melee weapon in the entire game. This means PoopyDevourer actively holstered his firearm and scored the 116 Melee kills with his character’s bare fists.
The best part is that not all enemies in Helldivers 2 can be defeated with just a single hit. Most of them take a lot of damage, which makes the 116 kills even more impressive.
What does the player want? xXIns1d1ousXx or PoopyDevourer captioned his reddit post I won’t stop until I have a Melee gun, Joel. He goes into more detail about this in the comments: He wants a real melee weapon like a sword or a hammer. He would also think a chainsaw would be cool.
The developer that xXIns1d1ousXx addresses directly in his post is one of the game masters of Helldivers 2. Joel manages the galactic campaign, the game’s meta-game. Together with his team, he takes care of, among other things, the difficulty level of the missions. However, since he doesn’t seem to be responsible for implementing weapons, he may be the wrong address for melee weapon requests.
How do the other players react to the 116 kills? The other commentators celebrate xXIns1d1ousXx for his achievement and throw their wishes for Melee weapons into the ring. Here is a selection:
In the previous game to Helldivers 2 there were already some Melee weapons, such as the Energized Cavalry Saber. If the community continues to convey their desire to the developers, the chances are not bad that melee weapons will make it into the game in a timely manner.
For now, players can pat themselves on the back: a big in-game event started last week, which ended with the unlocking of the new mechs. The community actually managed to achieve the goal of liberating a planet. Now everyone can unlock the new exosuits. But are they any good?
