The German MMORPG Albion Online is booming with the launch of the new server in Europe. The peak number of players on Steam has more than doubled, and the number of viewers on Twitch is skyrocketing: Currently, only WoW is larger among MMORPGs.

How big is the boom? The MMORPG is currently bursting at the seams. There are queues on the server. A screen from Polish site mmorpg.org.pl shows that 8,312 players were waiting in the queue.
The MMORPG reached 27,208 players on Steam on April 29th – this is its all-time high. Albion Online has never had more players than in the last few days. Compared to the peak in March 2024, this was more than twice as many players who were online at the same time.
On Twitch, viewership has increased by 177% in the last 7 days. Only WoW is even bigger among the MMORPGs there.
The appeal of the new server inspires sandbox MMORPGs
This is what lies behind it: Sandbox MMORPGs like Albion Online have a “fresh server” effect like browser games.
When a new server launches and everything is fresh, there is a lot of hype about who will prevail, reach key milestones and establish a position of power. Over time, such a server becomes more stable and therefore more boring.
In sandbox MMORPGs, a “new server” is like a wipe in Escape from Tarkov. Everything is at zero, everything is new and exciting. This leads to a boom, comparable to the release of a new MMORPG. As is well known, the first few hours are the best hours there too.
