Warframe is an online shooter from Digital Extremes. The development studio seems to give a player a gift every year for his birthday, but he can’t do much with it. And he has himself to blame for that.
On Reddit on December 19th, a player showed a screenshot of his message box in Warframe. There you will see a message from “Warframe Support Team” with the title “Happy Birthday, Tenno!” The content of the message shows 3 credits. The player is sure: This must be a joke.
However, he has himself to blame for this, as he later explains in the comments.
“You send me a credit as a joke”
What kind of gift is this? On the screenshot in the Reddit post you can see 3 credits. This is an in-game currency in Warframe that you get for missions, among other things, and can be used to buy blueprints, weapons and equipment.
“FatCatUwU”, the creator of the post, says he received 1 credit in his first year in Warframe, 2 in his second year, and 3 this year.
“In a few million years, this will be a very regular income in credits,” he writes in the post. In the title of the thread he writes: “3rd year in a row sends me [Digital Extremes] a credit for my birthday as a joke!!”
You can see the screenshot of his message box here:
Why is the gift useless? Three credits isn’t much. You can earn many times that amount with just one mission. “The Index” on Neptune is one of the most rewarding game modes in Warframe for newbies, as you can earn a large amount of credits through the rounds. If you choose “High Risk”, you will receive 200,000 credits with a win and 250,000 credits for each additional round won.
In addition, the player cannot buy anything with three credits. A Warframe weapon system blueprint costs between 25,000 and 100,000 credits (via warframe.fandom.com).
It started with the player’s birthday wish
How do other players react to the gift? Many users joke in the comments that it is a solid passive income. “ItsDynamical” writes: “This may be a joke, but wait until you reach 100 and then the profits will flow.” One writes: “Don’t spend it all at once!”
User “Narroh” commented: “Oh man, on the one hand I would like to message the support team to see if I can also get credits as a birthday prank. On the other hand, I don’t want to burden them with nonsense while they’re doing their work.”
“FatCatUwU” responds that it is not a good idea to flood the support tickets with such requests now and asks players to refrain from doing so. This was once the reason for the “useless” gift.
How did this even come about? When asked how the whole thing started, he links to a Reddit post from 2021. There he writes that he himself requested the first credit: “I have [Digital Extremes] “I sent an email asking for 1 credit for my birthday and I got my wish.”
Other development studios also give gifts to their players. The team behind Lost Ark reported at the end of 2022 with the news that they wanted to give a gift not just to individual players, but to all players. However, that didn’t go quite as planned:
Lost Ark distributes gifts, makes mistakes – sends out even more gifts straight away
