Patch 5 introduced “Honour Mode” into Baldur’s Gate 3, which presents players with an even tougher challenge because you cannot reload in this mode. A player lost in the mode because he forgot an important item.
In Honor Mode you only have a single save file and therefore cannot reload, for example to get a better result when rolling the dice or to restart a difficult mission.
In Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3 you will be faced with an important decision. The issue is whether or not you should free Orpheus, the prince of the Githyanki and the legitimate leader of his people.
If you decide to free him, you will need an important item. We have explained in this article how you get the item and what the consequences are if you save it – or not.
However, one player forgot the important item and basically lost the entire game because he couldn’t reload in Honor Mode.
Spoiler: The article contains spoilers for Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3.
How did he lose the game? On Reddit on January 4th, user “JohnFrum” wrote that he believes he has found the “stupidest way” to lose in Honor Mode in Baldur’s Gate 3. In his text he describes what happened to him:
I’m on the way to the final battle and decided to free Orpheus, so I swapped Karlach for Lae’zel because she would sulk if I didn’t bring her with me. We just delivered the message to the Emperor, and he left us in the Prism.
Great! Now all we have to do is smash the rocks with the special hammer we went all the way to hell for. Lae’zel, you have the honor!
What? You forgot to get the hammer from Karlach?!?
But we’re in a red zone, we can’t rest, and the Emperor closed the gate when he left. So now we’re all stuck here with only our farts for company for the rest of time, I guess. Maybe we can cut off his arms and free him that way?

In a comment, “JohnFrum” writes that he has already finished the game once. When asked why he wanted to take La’zael with him at all, he writes that his main character had planned with La’zael from the beginning to free Orpheus. That’s why he thought it was important for her to be there.
He actually wanted to take Karlach with him too, but spontaneously decided to take Gale instead. And then he forgot to hand over the Orphic Hammer from Karlach to La’zael.
In the comments on the Reddit post, a user notes that there should actually be a security mechanism here, such as the Emperor not leaving at all if you don’t have the Orphic Hammer with you.
Another user notes that Raphael appears in the situation, mocks the player’s incompetence and gives him the Orphic Hammer. At least as long as you didn’t kill him and accept his offer.
For MeinMMO author Fabienne Kissel, the devil Raphael is one of the favorite villains in Baldur’s Gate 3. She has put together her top 5 in a ranking.
