In Baldur’s Gate 3 there are tons of decisions that influence what happens. You can add a popular character to your camp, but doing so will have dire consequences.
Which character is it about? It’s about the Tiefling bard Alfira, who you can meet early in the game. Alfira is one of the refugees from Elturel seeking protection from the goblins in the Emerald Grove. She plans to travel on to Baldur’s Gate and hopes to improve her musical talent.
She is undoubtedly one of the most popular characters in Baldur’s Gate 3 and many players still wish she was a companion – but so far she isn’t.
Spoiler: The article contains spoilers about the Dark Desire in Act 1.
According to his friend Optimus Alex on reddit, one player started his first playthrough as the Dark Desire. He had wanted Alfira to join the group since his first playthrough.
Because in a run without the Dark Desire, there is no option to invite them to the camp.
What mistake did the player make? Without knowing what awaits him, the player helped Alfira in the Emerald Grove. When he spoke to her, she expressed: I want to join you – fight alongside you. I want to help people – like you helped me.
Full of anticipation, he contacted Optimus Alex and wrote to him: Wait a minute. Was this an option all along? You knew this all along and didn’t tell me? Optimus Alex replied: Oh. Oh buddy. He also shared on Reddit that he didn’t have the heart to tell him what dire consequences the whole thing would have.

What dire consequences? As the Dark Desire, one of the six origin characters, he plays a murderer with a dark past. However, the Dark Desire can no longer remember the deeds or the past.
An inevitable plot point is Alfira joining the group with the Dark Desire and being murdered by the player character.

I was SO excited to have her as a companion. I had just started a new run when the latest update came out and I thought it was part of the new update but NO. I have never experienced such a rollercoaster of emotions.

There is a trick to save them after all: You can save Alfira, but in order to do so you will kill another bard named Quil. To save Alfira, you must knock her out using non-lethal attacks before taking a long rest. The event will be triggered depending on your progress.
So you can also reload the last save if Alfira appears in your camp. Then go to Alfira and knock her out with the non-lethal attacks. The non-lethal attacks are a passive setting that you can turn on and off.
What does the community say? The player is not alone in this experience; numerous other people from the community were also looking forward to Alfira as a companion and were shocked when they ultimately killed the bard. We have summarized a few comments for you:
