Player despairs for 40 hours because she takes a wrong turn

Released for the Nintendo Switch in May 2023, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is considered by many to be a masterpiece – it has a 95% Metacritic rating. For the journalist Jasmine Gould-Wilson from Gamesradar, however, the game turned out to be far too difficult. She had accidentally activated the “Elden Ring” mode.

That was the player’s experience: On Gamesradar, the journalist writes that she was completely desperate for 40 hours in Zelda:

  • Killed bosses with a single hit
  • She barely felt any character progression, her link just wasn’t getting stronger
  • During each boss fight, she died three to five times.
  • She had to play ultra-carefully, Zelda felt like Elden Ring to her
  • She writes:

As I made my way through Frost Gleek, I had little more than a handful of arrows, a shield, and a rapidly dwindling will to stay alive.

Player wanted to save 30 minutes with a shortcut

What did she do wrong? Right at the beginning of the game, the author took a creative shortcut, followed a beaten path and saved herself the “long way” with the glider. But that would have led her to a place that would have explained the equipment system to her first.

She says she thought she was clever and saved herself half an hour of walking with the shortcut and was as creative as the game wanted. After all, the new Zelda aggressively encourages players to be “innovative and adventurous”. So she did, and when the game said, “Go West,” she first took to the skies and flew over the mountains.

However, because she missed the seminar in “How to upgrade my items” and jumped right into the fray, she had to play the game for 40 hours without the intended equipment.

The author persuaded herself that it would get even better – if she “moves a little further”. Somewhere in the main story she would meet the “Great Fairies” she knew from other Zelda games. But the moment never came.

When did you fail? It was only after 40 hours that the journalist realized the reason for all her problems when she looked at a colleague’s character and saw upgraded armor pieces there.

Then I realized I missed something big. I didn’t have to advance further in the game, I had to go back.

Well, sometimes it’s good to go with the flow.

Most are into the new Zelda, but there is one big critic:
