In Elden Ring there are many NPCs that you can meet during your journey in the intermediate lands. However, one person is very cunning and will even steal from you when you least expect it. You can find out who this is and how you can get your runes here.
What kind of NPC is this? This is Gostoc, the gatekeeper of Stormshroud Castle. This clever little guy with only one hand wants to gain your trust right from the start of your journey through the castle. He gives you the tip to take a detour and not take the direct route through the gate to get into the castle.
A wise piece of advice, because players who ignore it will be shot at and killed by many enemies and ballistae. Despite his helpful gesture, you shouldn’t trust him because he’s after your runes. He steals from you as soon as you die and steals 30% of your runes that you dropped.
Despite his atrocities, not everything that seems lost is lost. Because you can get your stolen runes back.

Player kills NPC – Gets 100 million runes
Where can I find the NPC? Gostoc can be found at the Place of Grace “Stormveil Main Gate” at the start of your journey. To do this, go right past the gate into the room with the two large tables. Gostoc is on the wall on the right side of the room. So if you want your revenge now, you can kill him.
However, later in your journey, Gostoc will change positions and often visit places that are difficult to reach just to get your runes. Reddit user Esbidee tracked down Gostoc in one of these locations to get his revenge:
He encountered Gostoc on the roof of a chapel near the walls of Stormshroud Castle. After he discovered it, he kicked it into the abyss and killed the crook. As a surprise, Esbidee was given over 100 million runes because Gostoc had stolen them from Esbidee over time.
How does the mechanics work? Gostoc the Rogue steals from you every time you die near Stormshroud Castle. However, he doesn’t steal an arbitrary number of runes, but always 30% of the total amount you had in your pocket at the time of your death.
The interesting thing here is that Gostoc works like a bank. So if you haven’t killed this crook yet, you can use it to stash your many runes so that you can get them back later if you need runes. This way they don’t get “lost”.
