The Pokémon games are actually considered to be quite simple, but the battle system hides complex tricks and strategies that have shaped a competitive scene. One player tried to do the most damage in every Pokémon game, but it’s more complicated than you might think at first glance.
What do you have to consider when it comes to damage in Pokémon games? Pokémon started in 1996 with Pokémon Red and Blue, and over the last 28 years the games have become increasingly complex. That’s why several factors are important when it comes to damage value, not just the strength of the attack and the Pokémon.
The characteristics of different generations are also important. Before Generation 3, there was no division between physical and special attacks. Each type was assigned to a type of attack.
The YouTuber behind the channel King The Luck attempts to cause the most damage in a generation in a YouTube video. The exciting thing is that it’s not always the strongest Pokémon that can achieve the highest damage. You need math and tricks from each generation.
Probably the most popular Pokémon game currently is Pokémon TCG Pocket:
Sometimes the games have to be tricked
How does King The Luck do it? He always first looks at which is the strongest attack in the respective game. In Generation 1, for example, it is Sky Sweeper. He then tries to find the strongest Pokémon to match the attack. Since Dragoran can’t learn strong buff attacks like Sword Dance, he switches to Dodri. Dodri can learn Sky Sweep and uses Mimicry to copy his opponent’s Sword Dance.
However, you also have to keep in mind that he always takes the weakest Pokémon as an opponent that can still learn Sword Dance. In this case a Paras, as it is also weak against flying attacks.
In Generation 2, the theoretically strongest attack is Waltz in the fifth round. This is doubled if you used Einigler before. But here it gets more complicated.
He must first use Sword Dance with another Pokémon, switch with Stafette, copy Einigler, then prepare Waltz to hit a Yanma that has copied its previous teammate’s debuffs through Stafette with the 5th hit.
You can see the exact set-ups in his YouTube video:
Things get exciting from generation 3 onwards
What’s next? In Generation 3, Waltz remains the theoretically strongest attack in terms of value. Deoxys (attack form) has the highest attack value. To hit Waltz with Staff, Deoxys needs to grab Kecleon’s ability and switch its type. With Right Hand and hatched level 1 Pokémon you get an even higher value against Yanma.
In Generation 4, Pottrott’s highest attack stat is when he uses Power Trick to swap his defense stat with his attack stat. In addition to the set-ups from the third generation, there is also Kinoso’s Plant Gift ability and the Metronome item.
Generation 5 works the same way, just with 2 Kinosos through the triple battle. In generation 6, the Forest Curse attack is added. This also gives a Pokémon the Ice type. Pottrott remains, as does the previous set-up. You make him an ice type via Kekcleon detours and deal the highest possible damage with Frostbite, the ice equivalent of Waltz, against an eF-eM that now has 3 types that are weak to ice.
There are no three-way battles in Generation 7, but you can use an opposing commander to ensure that the right hand is used more than once. As an opponent you use a color eagle that has acquired the types Dragon and Flying and through Forest Curse and Plant.
In Generation 8, the Frostbite attack has disappeared, so you have to use Waltz again. Set-up remains similar to before. In Generation 9, the theoretically strongest attack is Last Honor. This causes more damage for each defeated Pokémon in the team. Revitalizers give you absurdly high attack values.
What is the most damage possible in 28 years of Pokémon? This can be achieved through Final Honor in Generation 9. Since Pottrott is not in the game, you have to increase your Pokémon’s defense value to the maximum with the attack Divider and then change the attack value with Power Trick.
With Farbagel and a similar set-up as before (only as a ghost type), you will probably get the highest value that you can achieve in the games. But you can only achieve this if you control both sides of a fight. In a normal fight, such setups are impossible.
