“Played 104 hours, highly addictive, love it”

Today, August 16th, the game “Backpack Heroes” started in Early Access on Steam. This rogue-like strategy game with RPG elements is all about inventory management. The game costs €12.59 – there is also a free demo to download. The developers are based on the legendary inventory of Resident Evil 4. For fans of games like Destiny 2 or Diablo 3, a dream comes true: when you level up, you can expand the inventory.

What kind of game is this?

  • As a single hero with an animal face, you run through a dungeon in “Backpack Heroes”, kill monsters, open treasure chests, meet traders. So far, so well known.
  • Where other games are about equipping your character with new items, leveling up skills and becoming more and more powerful, Backpack Heroes is all about inventory and equipment management. Items are not created, but always remain clearly visible in the centrally placed inventory:.
  • The player starts with a few 9 inventory slots arranged in 3×3 tiles. But after his 1st fight, he can already expand his inventory by 4 places – a dream for every fan of Destiny 2 or Diablo 3, where there was always too little space in the inventory.
  • Anyone who has seen the trailer will immediately understand what Backpack Heroes, the new game on Steam, is all about:

How is the fight going? The fight proceeds in such a way that you do not hit the opponent directly, but click on the sword in the inventory and use it to rake the opponent. He has well visible life points and armor values, when they drop to zero, he goes into NPC nirvana where he belongs.

During and after each fight, you have to make strategic decisions on how to use the inventory space perfectly:

  • Do I keep the poison potion that is blocking a slot in the inventory and save it for later fights, or do I use the poison now, making the fight easier for me and also giving me an extra spot to maybe take the flaming axe that drops as loot?
  • Do I have room for gold pieces if I want to visit a merchant in the next room? And if no, what do I throw out of inventory for it?
  • What might be my next opponents and how can I prepare for them?
  • Am I overdoing it when I hoard the 5th heal item or am I absolutely right and anything else would be irresponsible and reckless?
  • You can download the free demo on Steam – the game also costs “only” €12.59

How much does the game cost and what is special about it?

Backpack Heroes is currently €12.59 on Steam – it’s discounted by 10%.

But nobody has to buy a rat in a poke. There is also a free demo where you can give the game a try to see if you like the concept.

The game may only have appeared on Steam today, but it has been in development and play for quite a while. It is formally still in Early Access.

92% positive reviews rave about Backpack Heroes on Steam

What do the reviews say? The reviews are 92% positive. Especially budget titles with such a narrow focus often have a good user rating. Backpack Heroes seems to motivate you in the long run.

  • One user writes: “104 hour pre-Early Access play… Says it all. Addictive, it’s great. I love it!”
  • Another user says: “Slay the spire, but instead of maps there is inventory management. Also… Furries!”
  • “Great game – excellent rogue like. I’ve had many hours in the demo and early access is just a better version.”
  • At high levels, the game looks a bit like magic:

Are there also negative voices? The few negative voices complain about bugs in the game and that there is a lack of the feeling of having really achieved something.

Overall, however, the reactions are very positive at 92%. I guess there’s no harm in downloading the demo if you don’t run away screaming from the game about inventory management.

In the future, the game should get controller support and an overworld with a meta-progression. The hardest fans are apparently already waiting for this meta progression.
