He does not want to rule it out completely, but if the Netherlands had to go into lockdown again because of the corona virus, that would be “a national embarrassment”. That’s what medical microbiologist and epidemiologist Marc Bonten of UMC Utrecht told RTV Utrecht yesterday.

Bonten, who was also a member of the Outbreak Management Team during the past corona period, emphasized that new variants can certainly arise, but that the Netherlands has everything in-house to prevent us from having to (partially) lock again. “We have the knowledge, the vaccines, the medicines, excellent healthcare and an above-average highly educated population. It is important to use this in a good way.”
