Platinum Jubilee pins awarded in Chatham Kent

For long-standing service to their community, several Chatham-Kent residents received a special honor on June 30.

A Platinum Jubilee pin presentation took place at the John D. Bradley Convention Centre, with more than 30 people on hand to accept their awards. Others who were also nominated will receive their pins at a later date.

The Canadian Platinum Jubilee emblem was created to mark the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne and is a symbolic statement of the enduring relationship between Canada and the Crown.

Chatham-Kent–Leamington MPP Dave Epp made the presentations to each individual, saying the event was a chance to not only celebrate the Queen’s legacy but also the contributions of those gathered.

“We hear much today about freedom. But freedom should always be considered in concept, in tandem with duty,” Epp said.

“We hear a lot about our rights. But our rights should always be coupled with our responsibility.”

Epp said the Queen has set an example throughout her reign, noting “it’s something for all of us to emulate.”

The sacrifices that families of recipients have made during their service must also be recognized, he added.

Former MPP Darcy McKeough and Ontario treasurer, who also has his silver and golden Jubilee pins, said he was pleased with the honour.

“I’m so proud to be associated with these good people,” he said after the ceremony.

Jennifer Wilson, who has been involved with such causes as the YMCA and Chatham-Kent Hospice, said she accepted her pin on behalf of all volunteers in the community.

“We can’t all get pins, but I wish we could,” she said, “because it’s really what community is about. Caring for each other and serving each other.

“It’s not me — it’s everybody who works with me.

Although volunteers don’t help out for the recognition, Tim Haskell of the Chatham Goodfellows said he thinks the Jubilee presentation shows they’re appreciated.

“It’s pretty awesome,” he said. “I’m quite humbled.”
