Utrecht had 374,374 inhabitants on January 1. The limit for class 9 is 375,000 inhabitants. It is expected that Utrecht will pass that limit this year, but a new classification will not take place until January 1, 2025. That is why the Executive Board (DB) of the municipal council came up with the proposal to increase the class now. This should be the case especially because the workload of councilors is very high due to the rapid growth of the municipality. “Due to the city’s leap in scale, the administrative burden for council and committee members, mayor and aldermen in Utrecht is comparable to that of political office holders in Amsterdam, Rotterdam or The Hague,” the DB writes in the proposal. “The quantity, nature, size and complexity of files in the municipality of Utrecht translates into a large workload and high workload for all political office holders.”
