PKK supporters are extradited to Turkey

The government has today decided on the extradition of a PKK supporter to Turkey.
– I can confirm that the government has made a decision to grant the extradition of a 35-year-old Turkish citizen from Sweden, says Ashraf Ahmed, subject advisor at the Ministry of Justice, to TV4 Nyheterna.

The Turkish citizen, a man, was convicted of drug offenses in Turkey in 2013. Now he is to be extradited to Turkey, something that SVT News was the first to report.

– He has been sentenced to four years and seven months in prison by a Turkish court, says Ashraf Ahmed, subject advisor at the Ministry of Justice.

Exactly when he will be extradited has not been fully determined.

The man himself opposes the extradition and claims that there are obstacles according to the European Convention, something that the Supreme Court has decided that it does not do.

– The Supreme Court has examined the case and found that there are no obstacles to extradition according to either the Extradition Act or the European Convention against extradition to Turkey, says Ashrad Ahmed.

The government agrees, says Ahmed.

According to the Supreme Court’s examination, the man must have had connections to both the YPG and the PKK.
