“It must be grating, the polar bear pees just as clumsily as we deal with the world,” adds artist Hofman. “That’s the humor. You used to have Ernst’s wink on the back of the Tintin, this is a big wink.” Images of the polar bear went around the world, it was not the primary purpose, but it was capitalized on, Hofman admits. “I didn’t necessarily have that in mind, that was a bit of luck. Art normally has no purpose. But it contrasted beautifully with the museum, you make it for the local population. The mother who turns the corner with her child comes cycling and bets whether the polar bear pees or not.”
