Karel Zeman combined animation with real actors in his fantasy and sci-fi films. He later became known as the Czech Méliès thanks to his creative use of special effects. This unique style is also featured in his 1957 masterpiece The Invention of Ruin.

Visually unique sci-fi classic
Anyone who knows the classics by Georges Méliès, above all Journey to the Moon, knows the direction in which the visual style of The Invention of Ruin goes. For the Jules Verne film, Karel Zeman drew heavily on the Victorian illustrations from the first editions of the books and created a fantastically abstract set design with unusual backdrops.
These are supported by a mix of different animation styles in combination with the use of real actors. The highlight: the actors behave according to the crazy environment and fit perfectly into the extraordinary overall picture.
But what is the invention of doom about?
A scientist makes an invention that could be used as a deadly weapon in the wrong hands. This calls the notorious pirate Aregas onto the scene, who abruptly kidnaps the professor and his engineer by submarine and tries to get them on his side. But the assistant recognizes the pirate’s dark machinations and seeks help…
