A Turkish Airlines plane was forced to make an emergency landing in New York after one of the pilots died on board, the airline said in a statement.

The plane was en route from Seattle to Istanbul on Wednesday when the 59-year-old pilot lost consciousness moments after takeoff.

The crew decided to make an emergency landing and tried to revive the pilot, but his life could not be saved.

The man had worked at the airline since 2007. He was cleared for work in a routine check in March that indicated no health problems.
