Two men have been fined for having smuggled twelve pigeons into the country via the ferry in Helsingborg. The birds were in pizza boxes in the trunk, writes HD.

It was on March 7 this year that a car that drove off the ferry was taken in for inspection at customs. Partially hidden in the luggage compartment, customs found three pizza boxes containing a total of twelve pigeons. Two boxes were in the partition cover and one in the spare wheel compartment.

The men in the car are brothers, 41 and 45 years old. The 45-year-old denied any crime and said he did not know the pigeons were in the car. The 41-year-old said that he got the pigeons from some friends and that he did not know that they could not be brought into Sweden without an animal health certificate from a veterinarian.

The men are sentenced to 80 daily fines, a total of SEK 8,000 and SEK 6,400 respectively. The pigeons had to be brought back to Denmark.
