Pieterse finished third at the Cyclo-Cross World Championships last season and second the year before. Both times the world title went to compatriot Fem van Empel. The cyclist won a stage in the Tour de France Femmes last season and, after missing out on a medal in mountain biking due to bad luck at the Olympic Games earlier, she became world champion in that discipline.
