The 72 Congolese senators elected at the end of the elections on August 20 installed the office of the upper house of Parliament on Wednesday September 13, on behalf of the fourth legislature. Unsurprisingly, Pierre Ngolo, close to President Denis Sassou-Nguesso, was elected. He has led the Senate since 2017. The finances of this institution will now be managed by one of the daughters of the head of state as first quaestor.

A loyal supporter of the Congolese head of state, Pierre Ngolo, 69, a former philosophy teacher, is an early activist for the ruling Congolese Labor Party (PCT). He was its secretary general until 2019. On Wednesday, he obtained 100% of the vote in the election of the new Senate office, and retains his position on the perch.

Just after his victory, he asked his colleagues to observe a minute of silence in memory of the thousands of victims of the earthquake in Morocco and the floods in Libya.

Pierre Ngolo then pleaded for good electoral practices in Congo, where the results of the elections are often criticized by the opposition. “ What remains to be done and done at all costs is the gradual improvement of the electoral system. Process in which the involvement of all is truly required. Together, managers of institutions, political operators, civil society actors and citizens, let us all work to make our electoral system more efficient. »

Andréa Carole Sassou-Nguesso, daughter of the Head of State, joins the Senate office as first quaestor, therefore finance manager. Another notable entry is that of Élisabeth Mapaha, the sole elected representative of the Pan-African Union for Social Democracy (Upads), the main opposition group which inherits the post of second secretary.
