Physiological serum: what is it?

Physiological serum what is it

Daily used, physiological serum is an essential part of the aid kit. It is made up ofdistilled water sterile and chloride sodium at 0.9%. Transparent, slightly salty, it does not cause pain during his application on the skin or mucous membranes. This multi-use solution is marketed in different forms (single dose, spray, injectable product).

Benefit of physiological serum

The cells of our body are surrounded by a plasma membrane thus defining the extracellular and intracellular environment. This semi-permeable membrane allows certain molecules and water. According to the phenomenon ofosmosis, the water will spontaneously pass from the least concentrated medium to the most concentrated medium until the state of equilibrium.

In order to preserve this balance and the proper functioning of cells, the extracellular medium must be at a concentration of solute close to that of cytoplasm. If the environment is hypertonic (the solute concentration is greater than that of the cytoplasm), water leaves the cell whose volume will decrease. Conversely, in a hypotonic environment (concentration lower than that of the cytoplasm), water enters the cell which will swell until it bursts (osmotic lysis).

The physiological serum containing 9 g / l of sodium chloride fulfills the requirements of osmotic balance and is perfectly tolerated by the body.

Uses of physiological saline

In a hospital environment, physiological serum is present in the infusion bags. Its injection is indicated in cases of fluid and electrolyte imbalance or dehydration. Moreover, associated with other molecules, it makes it possible to convey or dilute other therapeutic agents for venous parenteral administration.

Perfectly tolerated by mucous membranes, it is frequently used for inhalations ofaerosols, L’nasal hygiene and ocular and washing wounds for the infant, child or adult.
