It was the fourth Witches in the Bay organized by Sarnia’s Janka Liska, a paddleboard enthusiast.

About 40 paddleboarders and kayakers, most in witches hats and costumes, gathered at about 6 pm at the kayak launch in Centennial Park to spend time paddling in the Bay while dozens of spectators watched from shore.

A pleasure boat docked across the bay at the marina was decorated for Halloween and paddlers who approached to say “hello” reported back folks there were giving out candy.

“I just really love Halloween,” Liska said previously “I saw a picture of a witch on a paddle board on Pinterest and I was, like, ‘I really want to do that here.’”

Previous events were held in the fall but Liska said she decided to move this year’s to warmer weather.

She said Wednesday’s turnout was typical for the event.

Nancy Brodie of Brantford, and formerly of Sarnia, traveled back Wednesday for the event, along with her daughter Jessa Grosvold of Paris, Ont.

There’s no charge but donations were being accepted for Tampon Tuesday Sarnia-Lambton, a chapter of the organization that celebrated its fifth anniversary earlier this year.

As of May, more than 10,400 boxes of menstrual products had been donated via the chapter, mostly to the Inn of the Good Shepherd’s food bank, along with 16 other local organizations.
