Wildlife educators from Speaking of Wildlife – an animal sanctuary near Orillia – made a stop at Wildwood Conservation Area in St. Marys on Sunday.

Alex Fry and Krystal Hewett brought with them six of the sanctuary’s animal ambassadors: Caddyshack, a groundhog, Pixie, an American kestrel, Rocket, a raccoon, Mimic, a fox snake, and a pair of turtles – Sam and Michelangelo.

Wildlife presentations and other summer events have returned to Wildwood, many for the first time since 2019.

“It’s been going so well,” said Hannah Ritsma, the conservation area’s summer program coordinator. “We’ve been having such a high turnout.”

Wildlife groups from other parts of Ontario will be visiting Wildwood later this month.

“We learn so much about different ecosystems, it’s so cool to learn about the animals in our own ecosystem,” Ritsma said.

More information about the summer events hosted at Wildwood is available on the conservation area’s Facebook page. There is no extra cost to attend an event at Wildwood. Day passes are $15.

Pixie is an American kestrel – also known as a sparrow hawk. She was injured in a vehicle strike but her caretakers at Speaking of Wildlife are uncertain if that contributed to the cataract in her left eye. Chris Montanini/Stratford Beacon Herald
