The pharynx is a conduit belonging to what is called VADS for Upper Aero-Digestive Tracts. It is located deep in the back of the mouth, above the larynx and the entrance to the esophagus.
We distinguish three major functions of the larynx :
- it passes food from the mouth to the esophagus during the swallowing phase, which includes it in the digestive system,
- it also passes the air entering through the nose and mouth towards the larynx located in the neck then the trachea, which includes it in the respiratory system,
- finally, it plays a role in language by influencing the sounds emitted by the vocal cords located in the larynx.
We distinguish Three parties on the pharynx, from top to bottom: the nasopharynx connected to the nasal cavity, the oropharynx connected to the mouth and the hypopharynx.
