Whooping cough, tetanus, hepatitis A and B, papillomavirus… These vaccines can now be made in pharmacies, for people aged 16 and over, provided they have a prescription. Here are the terms.
It is no longer mandatory to go to the doctor to perform certain vaccines in France. Vaccination is one of the optional missions that can be carried out by community pharmacists throughout France since March 1, 2019. On November 7, 2022, the list of vaccinations that can be performed in pharmacies is lengthenedannounces theOrder of Pharmacists in a press release of November 3. The goal: improve vaccination coverage in France and facilitate the patient journey wishing to be vaccinated. What is the list of vaccines available in pharmacies?
Authorized pharmacists (registered or assistant pharmacists, mutualist or mining relief pharmacists registered with the Order) are authorized to administer, on medical prescription of the product, vaccines against:
- diphtheria
- tetanus
- Poliomyelitis
- Whooping cough
- Human papillomaviruses (HPV)
- Invasive pneumococcal infections
- Hepatitis A virus
- Hepatitis B virus
- Meningococci of serogroups A, B, C, Y and W
- Rabies
For these vaccinations, pharmacists use monovalent vaccines (which contains only one valent, the part of a vaccine corresponding to protection against a single germ) or associates. Pharmacists were already authorized to administer vaccines against seasonal flu and the Covid-19 (derogation during the health crisis). Pharmacists wishing to carry out the vaccination activity must have validated dedicated training and practice in a pharmacy meeting specific technical conditions.
Can the DTP vaccine be made in pharmacies?
Yes, if the vaccination schedule goes in this direction, the pharmacist will be able to vaccinate with the appropriate vaccine comprising several strains (for example, DTPolio – whooping cough – Hepatitis B – Hib).
Who can benefit from a vaccination in a pharmacy?
All persons 16 years and older for which these vaccinations are recommended in the vaccination schedule in force, can benefit from a vaccination in a pharmacy, provided they have a medical prescription (except for the flu vaccine).
Can you be vaccinated in pharmacies without a prescription?
Vaccination in pharmacies requires a medical prescription. To date and apart from the flu vaccine, the regulations do not authorize pharmacists to prescribe vaccines, specifies the Order of Pharmacists. However, pharmacists will soon be able to prescribe certain vaccines themselves, can we read in the Social Security financing bill for 2023.
► The patient needs a doctor’s prescription to carry out a vaccination in the pharmacy.
► The patient should take go to a pharmacydirectly on site, online (Doctolib…) or by phone.
► On the day of the appointment, the patient comes to the pharmacy to be vaccinated.
► Once the injection is done, the pharmacist enters the vaccination act in the health record, the vaccination record or the shared medical file (DMP) of the vaccinated person. He indicates his surname and first name, the name of the vaccine administered, the date of administration, the batch number of the vaccine. If the information could not be entered in one of these tools, the pharmacist issues a certificate of vaccination to the patient. In the absence of a DMP, and subject to the consent of the vaccinated person, the pharmacist sends this information to his attending physician by secure health messaging (example: Mailiz ).
How much does a pharmacy vaccination cost?
The price of the product to be injected is different depending on the vaccine. To this must be added the price of the injection procedure. Health Insurance pays for certain vaccines and their injection (most often at 65% and the remaining part by the mutual if the person has taken out a “complementary health” contract with the mutual).
► To date, the vaccination fee for seasonal flu is set at 6.30 euros (excluding tax) in France metropolitan and 6.60 euros (excluding tax) for overseas departments and communities.
► To other vaccinations and in accordance with the new pharmaceutical agreement, the entry into force of the reimbursement of their administration by pharmacists is not yet effective. “In the meantime, and in accordance with the code of ethics, the amount of the injection service of these vaccines is set by the pharmacist with tact and moderation and brought to the attention of the public“, specifies the Order of Pharmacists.
