Pehr G Gyllenhammar, called PG by many, is dead. He is best known as AB Volvo’s CEO from 1971 to 1983, and then its chairman from 1983–1993. He took over the CEO role from his father-in-law, Gunnar Engellau, and he became one of Sweden’s most famous industrial leaders.
Since the 1990s, he has, with the exception of a few years, lived abroad, mostly in London, but later in Toronto, Canada.
As a board professional, he has had a wide range of assignments. Among other things, for the Stenbeck sphere’s power company Kinnevik, the Reuters news agency, the investment bank Rothschild Europe and the British insurance company Commercial Union – which after a merger rigged with Gyllenhammar as a key player became Britain’s largest insurance company under the name Aviva.
He has also been politically active within the People’s Party, now the Liberals.
