Sweden raged against the Norwegian crowd in Granåsen.
But sprint winner Kristine Stavås Skistad disagrees.
Nor Johannes Hösflot Kläbo or Petter Northug.
– My God…, says Kläbo.
Norwegian Kristine Stavås Skistad is the main competitor to the Swedish sprint stars. But she was actually close to not even advancing from the qualifiers during Friday’s sprint competitions at home in Trondheim. But it would still be a total success for the star, who for the first time this season broke the Swedish dominance.
The Swedes furious
In a raucous final, Linn Svahn and Emma Ribom looked like picking a Swedish double for a long time. But after a magical riot by Skistad, Sweden had to settle for second and third place. But afterwards it was all about the audience.
Several Swedish stars were furious at the treatment during the day, and especially the fact that the Swedish skaters were booed by the crowd throughout the day.
Frida Karlsson and Emma Ribom thought that the audience should grow up.
– I think it’s childish. There are probably a lot of children’s classes here, but they grow up soon too, says Karlsson.
– We have heard a lot of boos, both when we have run to the start, been presented and gone up on the podium. I think it’s a bit boring and bad attitude. You can cheer for those you want to cheer for, but you don’t have to boo Swedish skaters, says Ribom.
Northug’s Wrath
But the stars do not get approval in Norway. After her victory, Kristine Stavå’s Skistad instead went out and applauded the Norwegian audience.
– I couldn’t have had a better time. It was really fun to play on home ground and there was a great crowd that cheered us on today, she tells Nettavisen.
She is also supported by Johannes Hösflot Kläbo, who won the men’s sprint by far.
– They might have to wash their ears, he says, and continues:
– It is part of the sport. My God… You should be happy that there are people at the competitions, and the rest you have to endure, I guess the audience doesn’t mean anything personal.
Even Petter Northug, who during his career often had dusters with various audiences, is fighting back.
– There were people who made pig noises at me, and held up placards with pigs, when I competed in Falun. In Stockholm I received death threats. If you think this is disrespectful, you should stop playing sports, go sit in a library and read a book instead.
