Laiti is the president of the Sami youth association Suoma Sámi Nuora. She wants to share the award she receives above all with the Sami young people who fought for Sami rights, she tells EPN.
Petra Laiti works for Sami rights and that the Sami Parliament Act be renewed, something that has not yet been fulfilled.

“Like Fredrika, Petra Laiti also strives to create a more just and inclusive world. Laiti has defended human rights despite the hate speech she has faced and she has inspired others to activism,” reads the award committee’s justification.
The scholarship of 10,000 euros is awarded annually on author Fredrika Runeberg’s birthday on September 2.
Laiti wants to highlight the Sami people’s right to self-governance over their lands and watercourses.
